Pahranagat Valley High graduate Josh Sampo is getting ready to take on Zach Makovsky in a UFC match slated for Feb. 22 at Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas.
Sampo and Makovsky both hold a 1-0 record in the UFC. In the latest USA TODAY Sports/MMAjunkie MMA flyweight rankings, Sampo is currently ranked No. 11, and Makovsky No. 13. Sampo is currently on a winning streak with five fights under his belt, and an 8-1 record for his past nine matches.
Sampo’s debut to the UFC circuit was an incredible bout in November 2013 against Ryan Benoit, that won the title, “Fight of the Night,” of the Ultimate Fighter 18 Finale. Sampo choked out Benoit, but had missed his weight for the class making him ineligible to receive the $50,000 winnings.
Sampo is a 2002 graduate of PVHS, a two-time state wrestling champion, and has attended and graduated from Lindenwood University in St. Charles, Mo., where he was a member of the school’s two-time national champion wrestling team.
The main card will be available on pay-per-view after some preliminaries on FOX Sports 1, and on UFC Fight Pass. However, current times of the matchup has not yet been determined on the lineup.
