Lincoln County High hosts the Southern Division III Wrestling tournament this Saturday in Panaca. This is the meet in which the wrestlers in each weight class qualify for the state tournament next weekend in Winnemucca. The top four in each weight advance.
Pahranagat Valley hosted the regionals last year, and Lincoln coach Steve Culverwell said he asked to have it in Panaca this year. “We haven’t had a home meet in three years for our local fans to come to, and what better place to do that than the regionals.”
The Southern Division III Duels were held last weekend at Laughlin and that ranked each man in his class going into regionals.
For Pahranagat Valley, coach Brad Loveday said Salvador Heredia (106) will be the No. 1 seed. He was 8-0 at the Divisional Duels. Oscar Heredia (113) will be a No. 3 seed, Bailey Peck (170) is a No. 3 seed. Mateo Linares (195) is the No. 2 seed, Austin Horrocks (182) did not wrestle with an injured knee, but was given a No. 2 seed by the coaches. Also wrestling for PVHS will be Danny Heredia (126), Garrett Bowen (165), Caleb Hansen (182), Thane Solario (160), and Chris Thornton (182), but they had not been seeded by press time.
Loveday said everyone on the team wrestles at Regionals, but only the top four advance to state. “We’ve got a bunch of young kids all trying and hoping to qualify for state.”
Lincoln coach Steve Culverwell said, “Most of the kids wrestled right where I thought they were going to at Duels. We’re strong in the middle weights. We have 15 wrestlers and I think we can get 10 of them qualified for state. We took five last year.”
Ben Culverwell (106) will be the No. 3 seed; Zack Rowe (113) as No. 2 seed; Derek Mathews (126) as the No. 1 seed; Alex Samson (132) as No. 3 seed; Jesse Mathews (138) as No. 2 seed; Will Culverwell (145) as No. 2 seed; Frank Barrett (152) as No. 4 seed; Jesse McLean (160) as No. 1 seed; and Nick Thomas (182) as No. 4 seed.
Also wrestling for Lincoln will be Wade Stever (132), Sam Barfield (152) and A.J. Earnest (170), Dylan Midley (132), and Alisha Rowe (113), but they had not been seeded as of press time.
Mike Sparrow of Pahranagat Valley will be the tournament director in Panaca. All nine teams in Southern Division III will participate.
Culverwell said, “Right now there are four major teams in the division: Lincoln, Spring Mountain, Agassi, and Laughlin. Those teams have almost every weight class filled. Laughlin has a full roster, Agassi has all but one, Spring Mountain lacks two, and we don’t have anyone in three of the higher weights. Other teams have good wrestlers, to be sure, but they don’t have the numbers.”
In 2014, Spring Mountain was the regional champion and placed ninth in the state meet. Laughlin placed fourth in the state meet, and Pahranagat Valley was 11th.
Culverwell said he expects Spring Mountain and Laughlin will be the teams to watch closely for the regional team championship.
First matches are expected to start about 9 a.m.
NIAA tournament prices will apply.
