Lincoln County High School senior McClain O’Connor was given the highest award in Division III high school baseball in Nevada as he has been named All-State Player of the Year, as chosen by the coaches and NevadaPreps, the high school sports section of the Las Vegas Review-Journal. He was also Southern League Most Valuable Player in football.
In addition, three other Lincoln players, Nick Vincent, Mike Wood Jr., and Cody Thornock were also named to the All-State teams. All helped the Lynx (23-8) win their first state baseball title in 10 years, beating Yerington twice on championship Saturday in Reno.
Lincoln coach Raymond Wadsworth was named as Division III All State Coach of the Year.
Wadsworth said, “The team did a phenomenal job in staying together through the peaks and valleys of the season, and McClain was kind of the the glue that held everyone together. He truly carried the team. He wanted to win so bad, and that carried over to the other players. He and our other seniors had the attitude of refuse to lose and that carried over to the younger kids and everyone responded.”
Elsewhere, state champion Pahranagat Valley placed 10 players on the Division IV All League teams this season, including Most Valuable Player Tabor Maxwell. He was also co-offensive MVP in football along with Diquan Spiller of Spring Mountain. Pahranagat teammate Christian Higbee was baseball MVP in 2015.
The Panthers dominated Division IV baseball this season, matching the school’s best record of 26-3, closing out the season with a 19-game win streak, and sweeping both the regional and state tournaments.
